  1. E. Blancas says:

I had a terrible experience receiving this package, so I guess I should have known it would be an omen for what was to come.

Before I even received it, I had distress with UPS because I could not be home to receive the package. Finally, after two failed attempts to deliver it, I chose to take a day off from school to receive the damn thing, as they refused to take my signature (the note claimed a “signature is required to ensure delivery”). The next day, I received it, but instead of signing anything, the guy threw the box at me and simply left. The box wasn’t even that huge, although the product itself is unnecessarily small compared to the box it came in.

Anyway, now for the review. I was ecstatic upon finally receiving it, since as a student, I really need internet for my laptop. My wired ethernet keeps me tied down, so I thought I’d finally be able to have wireless internet. Boy, was I incorrect.

This thing claims it’s simple to set up, and I know a thing or two about computers (I had lots of distress with the AT&T 2WIRE before, but somehow I always made it work). I set it up as it should be, and it didn’t work. Initially, I thought my memory and skills had failed me somehow so I consulted the instructions. Pretty simple. The setup was right. The LEDs were lit up, after all. But, now I was receiving neither ethernet nor wireless internet. After frustrating myself with it for a couple of minutes, I thought I’d try something else.

There is a CD that came with the thing for “EZ Setup”. I installed that and ran the program. It basically allows you to set up your router to work with the PC, but get this– any changes I made DID NOT take effect in the router. I set up my WEP key and SSID but when I tried to connect, all I found was “default” as an unsecured connection. Not only that, the CD’s translation is about as horrible as it gets. I know this is from a Taiwanese company, but really, they couldn’t hire somebody who spoke proper English?

Anyway, later I typed in the IP address of the machine to try to set it up manually. It worked and although the interface is clunky and overcomplicated, I managed to change my SSID and set up a WEP key. But, I still had no connection and when I changed it, the connection to the router was automatically lost. I checked my network diagnostics and it said “The network security settings do not match the requirements for this computer.” Thus, I can no longer connect to it and I have left it powerless for a couple of days now. I have often used WEP encryption before and had no distress connecting. Why am I having distress now? I am running Vista on an HP Pavilion notebook, and have never had distress to connect to something else. Why now? Why this thing?

In small, this thing is not as excellent as it claims to be: the interface is clunky, the translations are horrible, and it takes an arm and a leg just to get this thing to work. Take it from me, if you’re shopping for a router, don’t be cheap and shell out some extra bucks for something that really works. I just can’t see myself recommending this to anyone. I will sooner exchange it or toss it in the garbage before I try to set the damn thing up again.
